At STATDOG, we believe that every lacrosse player has value. That belief started back in 2012 on the youth fields of San Diego. I took on a group of middle school boys who hadn’t made the cut elsewhere. They felt overlooked, but I believed they deserved the same chance to grow, learn the game, and feel valued.
I knew from my own experience as a player at St. Mary’s in Annapolis and at Dartmouth, as well as my time as an exec in the tech world, that confidence comes from winning small battles.
That’s when I discovered an article by economist, Michael Mauboussin, which dove into the analytics of lacrosse. By utilizing traditional data, such as shot percentage and time of possession, along with new concepts such as net possession contribution (NPC), I developed ways to show each player how his effort directly contributed to the team’s success.
We tracked stats on paper, quarter by quarter, and then something big happened—the boys saw the connection between their decisions and habits and the team’s performance.
The result? We started winning. But the wins weren’t the real prize. What mattered was watching their confidence grow, seeing them realize that the journey matters more than the scoreboard, and witnessing each player understand that he had value, purpose, and a place in the tribe.
From there, collaboration propelled progress. Parent volunteers tracked stats, coaches embraced the process, and eventually, a player’s parent put together a digital prototype that freed us from paper. By 2024, this approach had carried my varsity teams to CIF Championships and beyond, proving that when data and execution come together, players and teams thrive.
What began with pencils and paper evolved into a feature-rich data analytics platform. By 2025, STATDOG had been battle-tested by top coaches nationwide in over 150 games, transforming measurable elements of the game into Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that empower players and coaches alike.
Most importantly, STATDOG has never been about numbers for numbers’ sake. It was born from love for the player and love for the game. To elevate the entire lacrosse experience for coaches, players, and fans.
Stats are a tool. Belief is the fuel. When players believe in themselves, they execute, rising higher than anyone thought possible.
